Sand Mats® are made of light-weight, flexible, high-density polyethylene material that are uniquely designed with ¼ inch bolts to allow a vehicles tires to practically free themselves. Designed for even the heaviest diesel pushers, Sand Mats® can withstand up to 30,000 lbs. PSI, but are lightweight (26 lbs.) and flexible enough to mount and store on any type of vehicle. Each mat is approximately 1' x 4' and weighs 13 lbs. According to Abe Veidmark, Sand Mats® designer, he'd been working on the idea for quite some time. Abe grew up in Page, Arizona, well known for its rough terrain and unpredictable weather. Here off-roading was second nature for him. He remembers how he often became frustrated when his vehicle would become trapped in sand or snow and he was dependant on another driver to stop to assist him. "I got the idea from the old jack pads that were used by military vehicles to cross marshes and other unstable types of terrain." said Abe. "I decided to try a modified version for personal use." He said. Two years of research and development, and quite a few shredded tires later, Abe had his solution. "The bolts are the key," said Abe. "They had to placed in just the right pattern to allow the tires to grab and rotate without causing damage." When a vehicle becomes trapped Abe warns not to floor the accelerator, rather stop and place the Sand Mats®, bolt side up, under the tires. With minimum acceleration, the vehicle will free itself. Abe also notes that a shovel is not necessary, as the mats merely need to touch the tires. It is not necessary to "dig out." Abe has been selling his Sand Mats® worldwide. His customers range from ATV owners to off-road endurance racers. According to Abe he even just recently received an inquiry from a competitor of the DAKAR Rally, one of the toughest and most competitive off-road races in the world.
